One of the biggest responsibilities of a family herbalist is to prepare for seasonal ailments that are likely to affect your family. This means having what you need, whether it’s herbs, preparations, or recipes, on hand so when the time comes, you are ready.

In this post, I’m going to share how I prepare for seasonal ailments in my home and how you can do the same. I also have a big announcement to share with you at the end of this post. Don’t miss it!

How I Prepare for Seasonal Ailments | Growing Up Herbal | One of the responsibilities of a family herbalist is to prepare for seasonal ailments that are likely to affect your family. Here's how!

    1. Which Seasonal Conditions Affect You

The first thing I do when it comes to being prepared is to think about what my family and I might potentially face in the season to come.

I personally like to think a season ahead because that gives me time to make any herbal preparations and recipes I need that might take some time (I’m looking at you, tinctures!). Seeing how it is spring, I’m thinking of summer and the types of conditions that tend to present themselves during that season.

Now it’s your turn. Grab a piece of paper and start writing things down. I’ll get you started. Sunburns, bug bites, dehydration… now you keep going.

    2. Which Herbal Preparations or Recipes are Needed

Next, I like to think about the types of herbal preparations and recipes I would need for those ailments.

I start by asking myself if any of these preparations or recipes need to be prepared in advance. Perhaps there are specific tinctures or herbal oils needed for some of the recipes. If so, I make a list of these and get started making those herbal preparations right away. I also ask myself if there are any other supplies or ingredients I need to order so I’m ready to make the recipe with the time comes.

Back to our examples. When preparing for potential sunburns, I know I’m going to make a homemade mineral sunscreen to prevent burns from occurring, so I’ll need to make sure I have those supplies on hand. I’ll also want to have ingredients on hand to make a sunburn spritzer in case someone in my home does get a sunburn.

    3. Restock Your Herbs

Finally, I look at my stock of herbs to see if I need to restock anything.

If I’m running low on any specific plant material that is available to harvest in the summer, I add it to my to-do list so I don’t forget to collect more. If I’m running low on something that needs to be picked up at a local store that sells herbs or ordered online, looking ahead gives me time to place my orders and wait for shipping.

So there are three ways I go about staying prepared by having plant material on hand, thinking about upcoming needs my family or I may have, and being prepared with herbal preparations and recipes that will help me meet those needs if or when the time comes.

This is something you can do too! If you haven’t already, download my free ebook – The Home Apothecary — as it will walk you through the basic things you’ll need to create your own herbal apothecary so you can care for yourself and your family naturally.
