Herb Folk Oat Herb Study

Oats (Avena sativa) are often thought of as a food for people and animals, but did you know it’s used as plant medicine too?

Oats come in many different forms, and each of these forms can be used in different ways.

  • Oat Seed – The harvested mature seed of the plant. Usually dried. What humans and animals often eat for food.
  • Milky Oat Tops – The green tops of the oat plant contains the soft, forming oat seed and the hull. It’s harvested and dried when the milk is flowing in the plant.
  • Oatstraw – The green grassy portion of the plant that is left after the milky oat tops have been harvested.

Not only are oats great for the skin and the body, but they have a pleasant salty flavor and can be used in a variety of ways for health and healing. This month we’ll be exploring this herb together and learning about some useful ways to incorporate it into a healthy lifestyle.
